Lance's story
Lance is an amazing intelligent 8 month old, 50lb, large breed puppy that has survived incredible odds to become what he is today: An active happy boy who is able to walk a mile and enjoys the company of other dogs!

:D
Lance was found on the streets of San Antonio, TX in April 2017 near a yard filled with junk and debris. He was brought to Animal Control Services partially paralyzed. His first  reports indicated that he was in much pain, but was able to move his legs in random motions. He was given a bed, pain meds, and some time to recover from whatever caused his paralysis. Because he was deemed unadoptable

:/  he was also listed for euthanasia.

:'(
Lance was brought to the attention of Compass Dog Rescue through a FB video (shared earlier and in our photo library), and that is where his story really begins: Through incredible fostering, some generous pledges for his medical needs, a nutritious diet, some physical therapy and the perseverance by one determined dog, Lance is now walking a mile a day and is ready to start his forever home search

In his current foster home Lance has learned to walk on a leash, and he is also crate trained. He rides well in the car and looks forward to going on outings to local doggy friendly places. Lance loves to meet new people and seems to take new environments in stride. Lance is also attending obedience classes and may progress to doggie socialization groups. Lance is still working on housetraining, but that is due is some part to the delay in him having use of his hind quarters.. He likes to be clean and works hard to stay that way. For the most part, he is successful. He knows how to sit, down and is learning wait for his foster mom to lead before going in and out of doors. He is highly trainable and has the drive and stamina for much more given the right environment. He seems to want the company of other dogs, and likes to try to do whatever they do - so an older dog that knows the ropes and can help Lance learn to be a great dog would be an asset in his next home. Although Lance lived with a cat in his previous foster home, and has been around cats in his current home, he does show too much interest in them for us to recommend a home with cats.
Because of Lance's injury and consideration around that, his ideal home would be child free or have dog savy children 12 and up. His foster family would prefer no electric fencing or tie-outs for Lance - so a physically fenced in yard would also be best. Previous breed experience with a dog from working lines (German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, Cane Corso) is a plus, as Lance is exceptionally intelligent and will do best in a home with experience with dogs that are driven to do a job well.
Lance is an exceptional dog, who deserves an outstanding home that can support him and guide him to continue to be the best dog he can become. They need to understand that he has come so far but should his physical defects not reslove completely - will love him anyway
